Hydraulic characteristics of flow over stepped and chute spillways (case study: Zirdan Dam)

چکیده
Abstract Stepped spillways are suitable and economical options for high-storage dams that require significant energy dissipation, structural adaptation to roller-compacted concrete dams, spontaneous flow aeration. In this study, a numerical analysis of the hydraulic characteristics skimming regime stepped spillway Zirdan Dam is carried out. A comparison between smooth provided. By preparing models using k-ε RNG turbulence model multiphase mixture method, was completed. To verify performance model, field data were collected used validation. The results show presence steps along cause reduction in length boundary layer faster aeration occurs. spillway, cavitation index higher than critical limit entire spillway. Thus, risk destruction negligible. On other hand, with possibility may occur. This negative effect (negative pressures) occurs 56 m from crest on downstream side.

Energy Dissipation and Residual Energy on Embankment Dam Stepped Spillways
Stepped spillways are designed to increase the rate of energy dissipation on the chute and to reduce the size of the downstream energy dissipator. It is essential to predict accurately the turbulent dissipation above the steps for large discharges per unit width corresponding to the skimming flow regime. New measurements were conducted in a large facility with a channel slope of 21.8o and a ste...

One of the most important conflicts that shaft spillways have to deal with is vortex formation. This phenomenon leads to some unfavorable effects such as vibration in the body of structures, air entrainment and reduced overflow capacity of the spillway. Among all solutions for disrupted vortex formation, an innovative one called circular piano-key spillway, based upon piano key weir principles ...

متن کاملA Transition Flow Regime on Stepped Spillways the Facts
The stepped channel design have been used since more than 3,000 years. It is understood that low flows behave as successions of free-jets (i.e. nappe flow) while large discharges skim over the pseudo-bottom formed by the step edges. For a range of intermediate flow rates, a transition flow regime takes place. The dominant feature is stagnation on the horizontal step face associated with signifi...

Recently, particular attention has been paid to the stepped spillways due to the increasing effect of energy dissipation and the reduction of cavitations risks with the development of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) technique. Flow regimes on the spillways divide into three groups, namely skimming, jet and transition flow. Compared to the numerical methods, the majority of performed studies in ...
